All We Want For Christmas…

…is Spring! Brr!

murphmicasnowpic

Murphy sez: I’m not a cold-weather dog. No way, no how. So you can imagine my dismay for the past two weeks when it’s been too cold to walk, or even hang out in the backyard barking at squirrels. It was okay for a night or two, but this is getting ridiculous.

Mica sez: I’ll tell you what’s ridiculous. Ridiculous is those stupid fleece booties J makes us wear when it gets below about 5 degrees (f). I mean, having to wear a sweater is bad enough, but I *hate* having my feet touched, and putting those booties on every time we go out in the snow is just a total indignity. Thank goodness the sub-zero weather finally broke today (yesterday? I’m confused, since this post is late. Sunday!) so we could go out without getting all dressed up every single time again.

murphycrossroads

Murphy sez: I don’t really mind the coat or booties, ’cause I can stay out longer with them. At least if I stay on the paths J shoveled through the yard for us. That snow is *deep*! I mean, it comes up to your shoulders, Mica…that means it goes over my back! Not cool. Or very, very cool, depending on how you look at it. I tell you what – I went off-path for a few seconds there, and regretted it immediately. Ran in the house to warm up after that. Sheesh!

Mica sez: Yep, it’s pretty cold. It actually got down to -22(f) at our house this past Saturday. And J says I don’t have the sense to come in when I’m cold…I wait too long, until I can barely walk, and then she has to come out and walk me back in, and that’s kinda awkward…

murphaskew

Murphy sez: You should be smart like me. When I start getting cold, I sprint for the backdoor instead of staying out there freezing my but off. Beats trying to limp to the door when you can’t feel your feet!

Mica sez: But I get all distracted trying to find things in the snow. Digging and sticking my face in all that powdery white stuff are two of my favorite winter things. But I do tend to forget about time doing that…

You know, we did find a little sunshine this past weekend. Sunshine! In the living room!

micasunshine

Murphy sez: Thank goodness the house has big windows that heat the place up during the day, and also let all that beautiful warm sunshine into the living room. I don’t know why the sun can’t warm things up outside. Coldest day ever and the sun was still shining but the temps never got above zero. Weird how things work (or don’t).

Hey, next Sunday is Christmas! Do you think J got us something, Mica? Spring, maybe?

murphysun

Mica sez: I don’t think J can control the weather, Murph. If she could, I doubt she’d ever make it cold enough that she has to put on our boots and coats every single time we have to go outside and take them off every time we come in.

But I bet we’ll get something. New bones? New toys? Both? I can’t wait to see what’s under the tree for us!

Murphy sez: It’s gonna be so much fun! Hey…do you think J will still have time to write this post next Sunday? I heard something about three meals they have to eat out with family next weekend…

Mica sez: Yeah, we should probably wait until Monday. J has the day off. She’ll have plenty of time to type for us then.

Murphy sez: Yay! We can show off our new stuff, if we have any left over…

Mica and Murphy say: Merry Christmas, everyone! Talk to you next week!

A Fly-By “Hi”

Treats, Please!

Murphy sez: I think you all know by now that J is an unreliable translator. She gets confused sometimes, and we were too last week, on account of her being home an extra day for something she called a “fed-er-al hol-i-day”. I think it addled her brain a bit, but it’s okay. We got extra bully sticks, so no one’s complaining, right Mica?

Mica sez: Nope. Well, not too much, anyways. I mean, the couch is always mine during weekdays, and not when she’s home, so that’s a minor nit. It’s okay though. Mostly.

Hey, you know what? I don’t think anyone’s ever seen you with your cone on! You should show ’em a pic. They’ll feel all sorry for you and stuff.

Murphy sez: Well, I don’t mind it too much, really. I mean, it’s annoying after awhile, but J leaves the collar loose, so it’s not such a big deal. I can still play with my toys and stuff, which is important. I can’t properly greet people at the door without a gift of some sort. You should learn now to do that, Mica. It’s only polite…since we get treats anytime someone comes home…

dragoncone

Mica sez: That’s a pretty blurry pic, Murph. What happened? Were you shaking the life out of that dragon or something?

Murphy sez: Nah, just bringing it to J. She says I can’t hold still at all after work, but it’s on account of we’ve been napping all day. You know. Storing up energy. I guess that’s why you were chasing me around the yard last night after J took my cone off? I gotta admit, it was pretty fun just running a few laps. Took the edge off.

Mica sez: I know! It was fun! J tried to get a picture, and then video, and then gave up ’cause we were going to fast. And then we had to come in for dinner, because…food! Food is good. Almost as good as a bully stick, or a game of tug.

tugsnake

Murphy sez: Like this one, you mean? Incidentally, that Pupjoy snake is lasting a *really* long time. J should read the tag before one of us manages to tear it off, so she can get more. It’s awesome!

Mica sez: Yep…like that one. Maybe after this whole decorating/skeletons/stuff-from-the-basement thing is over. I don’t know what J and B are doing in the front yard, but they do it every year, and then people come wading through the lights and making a ton of noise and I get to bark at some of ’em after J and B get cold and finally come inside.

Murphy sez: Hmm. Maybe we’ll see one of those creepy clowns J keeps talking about. I might bark at one, if I can see him. Or I might just nap through the whole thing.

Except dinner. I never sleep through dinner.

Mica sez: Well duh. It’s food! But sometimes, ya just gotta nap. Like now, for instance. We have a busy weekend ahead, J says. Someone’s coming over Saturday morning, and then J and B are going to a party of some sort Saturday night. J says it’s just going to be a busy next two weeks, and we’ve just gotta stick it out until the holiday is all over.

Murphy sez: I think we can do that. I mean, we can watch those guys work. Tell ’em when they’re doing it wrong. And we can be nap-buddies too! We’re really good at taking naps, right Mica?

Mica sez: We sure are, Murph. Experts, I’d say…

Coolin’ Down

Headed out for a chilly Thursday night walk.
Headed out for a chilly Thursday night walk.

Mica sez: I noticed you’ve been more excited about walkin’ lately, Murph. What gives?

Murphy sez: It’s not 9 billion degrees out, for one thing. I like walkin’ when it’s cool. We can go fast, and smell lots of stuff, and not fall over half-ded when we get home. It’s awesome!

Mica sez: It is more comfy out, for sure. Of course we have to walk after dark now, which is okay until the lights in our leashes both run out of batteries at the same time when it’s pitch black. Bad enough other people can’t see us, but I get kinda jumpy when there’s not even a moon out.

Murphy sez: Yeah, well, that runner had it coming. He’s lucky we didn’t both go after him, sneaking up on us like that. Those guys are like cats. They should have to wear bells or something so we know when they’re coming up behind us. Sheesh!

Mica sez: I think I scared him pretty good too, so we’re even. And J has reminders set to charge our leashes weekly now (and on different days), so we shouldn’t run out of light either. If she could just control the rain, we’d be all set. I mean, we missed two walks last week on account of rain. So. Not. Good.

murphysnoozin

Murphy sez: Yeah, but we get extra bones or bully sticks when we have to skip a walk, so it’s not really that bad. I’d rather be dry – and I know you would be too, since you were a total pansy and wouldn’t go out for nearly 24 hours when that big storm came through. Geez. It’s not healthy to hold it that long, dude.

Mica sez: Mmm…bones. Speaking of which, I think J brought some new ones in the other night. You know, the weird night where she and B left for a little while, and then J came back and walked us, and then she left again, and then they both came back? One of those times, I’m sure I smelled new bones. Did you see ‘em? Or am I just hallucinating?

Murphy sez: Nope – you’re not hallucinating. I saw her try to sneak ‘em into the treat cupboard. And I smelled ‘em on her hands, too. What the heck is up with all that in and out stuff, by the way? I mean, they say we’re bad about going in and out, in and out, and then they do the same thing! Silly humans.

Mica sez: I don’t know where they go, but it happens one night a week all winter long. And they always smell like lots of weird stuff when they get home. I think you came to live with us after it was over last year. I don’t know why they don’t just take us with, wherever they go. But as long as we get our walks, I guess it doesn’t matter. Much.

It’s gettin’ colder out, too. Took me forever to warm up under a blanket after last night’s walk. J should get a sweater made for you before winter comes. I wonder what color she’ll make?

Murphy sez: I heard her mumbling something about a stash the other day, and yarn that would go with my fur. And cleaning the office so she could find the stash, whatever that is. So I think she’s workin’ on it. Or will be soon, maybe…

Until then, we’ll just have to keep walkin’ fast and cuddlin’ up under blankies when we get back. Still not a bad gig, eh Mica?

Mica sez: Not bad at all, Murph. Not bad at all.

Go Away, Rain!

bonetired

Mica sez: Rain sucks. I mean, how are we supposed to go out in the yard, much less go for a walk in this weather? Go away, rain. Bring back the sun!

Murphy sez: Yeah – what he said! Wet feet are no fun, and I need my sun, dang it. Warm, sunny sunshine to nap in. This cold cloudy stuff is for the birds. Or not even for the birds. For no one. No one likes this!

Mica sez: I hear people who plant stuff like it – silly folks. I mean, that’s what those crazy sprinkler thingy’s I hate almost as much as rain are for, right? Water falling from the sky…why does it need to do that? I get my water out of a bowl, thank you very much. I think we may need to hibernate for awhile, Murph.

Murphy sez: I’m all over it – got our blankets ready and everything. We’ll tuck in until this crazy weather blows over and gives us our sunshine back. You think J will give us extra treats, on account of it’s too wet to walk?

Mica sez: I did hear her talking about getting more bully sticks and bones. A nice yummy bone might be a good way to spend a rainy weekend, don’t you think? I did enjoy the bully stick last night…kept me busy for a good half an hour, anyways. Not nearly as good as a walk, but since J doesn’t like the rain anymore than we do, it’s not like we had another option. Geez.

Murphy sez: Hey – you don’t think J was serious about that whole soaping-us-up-on-the-patio thing, do you? I mean…it’s cold out there. And wet. We don’t smell that bad, do we?

Mica sez: I wouldn’t worry about that, Murph. She’d have to get wet too, so that’s not gonna happen. J doesn’t even like going out with us in the rain, so we’re safe, thank goodness. Ready to hunker down and sleep this bad weather away?

hibernation

Murphy sez: Absolutely. Sweet dreams, Mica.

Mica sez: Happy hibernating, Murph.

Itchy Scratchy

upsidedownmurph

Mica sez: So Murph – I hear you’re gonna have to start wearing your cone at night too for awhile. J sure seemed upset this morning when she saw what you did to your scabs…

Murphy sez: I know, I know. I was doing pretty good, leaving my leg alone not just at night, but early mornings. Especially after J started putting the yarn leggings over the top of my normal ones. I don’t like how the yarn feels on my tongue, so I won’t lick that. But last night the itching…oh man, the itching. I didn’t even realize I pulled the outer wrap off and licked off my scabs through the normal legging until J got up and was pretty disappointed.

J says there’s not much she can do to make it better, and I just have to get through a week or two of bad itches while my leg heals, but…I can’t. It’s just…too much itchy! So now when I have good scabs and tissue growth again, she says I have to sleep in my cone. Just for a little while.

Mica sez: Well that sucks. I mean, she’s the human. Doesn’t she know some trick or something to stop the itchies? Most of mine stopped when she started feeding me different food. Maybe she should change your food. Except your ears go all wonky whenever she tries.

Wouldn’t it be cool if your leg got all healed up though? Seems like it starts to heal pretty fast when she puts coconut oil on it. Maybe she can put more on if you’re wearing the cone, and that will help it stop itching, and then it can get all healed up. You don’t have too much of that anxiety anymore, so maybe it could even stay healed up. That would be cool, wouldn’t it?

Murphy sez: It sure would be! Not much to stress about here – aside from the neighborhood squirrel taking liberties with the power lines outside. Who does that little dude think he is, anyways? Last time I barked at him, he had the nerve to stop and chew me out right up there over our fence! Cheeky little devil. If he’d just come down and say that to my face…

pupjoysept16

Mica sez: New squeaky toy! Probably not as good as the snake we got in the last Pupjoy box, but just about. That snake is awesome. The squeakers are all ruined, but neither of us has been able to get a hole or seam open anywhere on that thing – he’s tough! Our best toy yet, ‘cept it would be better if there were two. Every time I try to bury him in a blanket for later, part sticks out and you find him! But no fair dragging him off to your bed with you, Murph. I mean, if you’re gonna chew on him, that’s one thing. But just to keep him away from me? Sharing is caring, buddy.

Murphy sez: I share. When I lose interest, anyways. Until I want it again. But that snake does make a good pillow sometimes. Though I like my blankets better. Good thing we have plenty of toys and bones, isn’t it?

Mica sez: Yep. But we could use some new bones. J said she ordered some at the meat shop last weekend, so hopefully they’ll be here soon. Big, yummy smoked bones from local grassfed beef. I guess that’s supposed to be a good thing, but I really don’t care as long as they taste good. And they always do!

You got anything else to talk about this week, Murph?

Murphy sez: Nope. Not a thing. We should get out more. Except…we do – every night. Maybe that’s what we’ll talk about next week, eh Mica? Walkin’, and Patsy Cline, whoever that is. It’ll be fun! And if we’re lucky, J will take some pics while we’re out walking this next week. Tricky, what with holding on to the two of us, but it would be cool…

Night Walkin’ & Yummy Stuff

nightwalk1

Murphy sez: Man, oh man. What are we gonna do about J, Mica? I mean, skipping one week’s blog post is one thing, but two? That’s a serious in-frack-shun. I think we should come up with a suitable punishment. Like she has to give us more treats or something. It’s not like we can type our stories ourselves…

Mica sez: Humans are weird, Murph. Always doing all these things that they *think* are important, but really, nothing’s as important as the dogs. Someday maybe they’ll learn that. I’d say you’ve done your best at making her pay though…getting up on the woodpile again, so she has to pull/carry you down? You’re not a light dog. And chewing off all your scabs just ‘cause she had to switch schedules for a few days?

Murphy sez: Yeah, well, you’re no saint yourself, dude. I think you’re possibly the whiniest, barkiest dog I’ve ever met. And the groans and sighs…geez. If anyone’s gonna make her feel guilty…

puppyeyes

Mica sez: Whatever. My point is, J puts up with a lot from both of us, but we’re adorable and she loves us, so she keeps us around. So we could probably forgo the fine for not typing out our blog post for two weeks in a row. This time.

Murphy sez: Speak for yourself. We both saw that big bag of bully sticks come back from Costco last night…but instead of cracking it open, she put it on the counter and made us go for a walk. What’s up with that? I mean, chewing is exercise, right?

Mica sez: You know that whining you were just whining about? You’re gonna hear more of it if I don’t get my walks, kiddo. J knew I needed to get out of the house, and so did you, even though you don’t like to admit it. Besides, it’s fun walking after dark. Everything looks different, and there aren’t as many motorcycles…

murphyleash

Murphy sez: And little random plastic flags show up out of nowhere and scare you half to death, like that one last week. I swear, Murph. I think you jumped three feet straight in the air when you ran into that little yard flag in the dark. And kudos for not barking, but man, your jaws snapped shut something fierce! J sure got a good laugh out of that one!

Mica sez: Yeah, yeah. You would have jumped too, if you’d run into that thing in the dark. I mean, there are no street lights! And our leashes don’t give off *that* much light…certainly not ahead of where we’re walking…

Last night’s walk was uneventful, at least. Though there were a lot of other dogs out walking. Thank goodness they were all on leashes. But no one has cool LED leashes like we do! Now we just need some cool light-up collars.

Murphy sez: I think J gets tired of switching collars on account of my cone. That would be pretty cool though. Maybe those ones with diamond-shaped lights?

Anyway, since we don’t have much to talk about this week, J thought we should share a treat recipe. She even took pictures! So should we post that now? Do you remember the ingredients?

micaleash

Mica sez: Yeah, but I think maybe we should put it on a different page – one for just that recipe, don’t you? That will make it easier for people to find when they forget to bookmark our site (naughty, forgetful people) and have to google to find it again. Except we need to name our treats, so people know what to search for…

Murphy sez: They could just search for LeashCandy.dog. I mean, it’s not that hard to remember, right?

Mica sez: No, it’s not, but humans are forgetful, remember? I think we should just call ‘em Easy Dehydrator Treats. ‘Cause they’re easy, and you make ‘em in the dehydrator.

Murphy sez: That’s kinda boring though. What about something like “Off-Leash Candy”? Or “Sweet Pea Crisps”?

Mica sez: You could be on to something there, Murph. Only there’s a bunch of veggies you could use, not just peas. So maybe “Sweet Veggie Crisps”?

ledleashes

Murphy sez: I can live with that. Eating them is even more fun. So when are we gonna post the recipe? Do we have time today?

Mica sez: I don’t think so, Murph. But we could post it tomorrow, and then people would have it to try out over the weekend. We could make Saturdays “Recipe Day”, and post recipes that J uses, plus other yummy stuff we come across here and there too. Think that will work?

Murphy sez: I don’t see why not! Let’s try it. Tomorrow, treats. Yummy, yummy treats. I think maybe it’s time to go raid the kitchen again, Mica. All this treat-talk is making me hungry.

Mica sez: You and me both! Let’s go…

Convo Corner: Aliens, Cats, & The Great Pumpkin Shortage

MilkshakeBegging

Murphy sez: I’m not sure where to start this week, Mica. I mean, there’s so much to discuss. A cat, a pumpkin shortage, aliens, a hair guy, someone at the front door, those pesky squirrels in the neighbor’s tree, new sidewalks, new posting days…I mean, how are we gonna keep it all straight?

Mica sez: Well geez, Murph. I think you just told everyone everything we had to talk about. We might as well just let the nice people go on with their Friday, I suppose. It’s not like J got all that many new pictures for this week either. I’m surrounded by slackers. Except the neighbors, who are just loud – especially when it comes to car doors.

Murphy sez: And motorcycles. Though the one that visits over there isn’t nearly as bad as some. I might get used to it. Eventually.

You’re in a mood today, Mica. What’s the deal? I didn’t spoil anything much…just summarized all the stuff we’ve got going on. You know, ‘cause it’s exciting. Well, most of it, anyways.

Mica sez: You’re excited about everything, Murph. Except walks. Which is weird, but we’ll leave that alone for now. Don’t mind me – I’m just hoping it won’t rain tonight, because J won’t take us walking if it’s raining. I don’t know why…we still have to go if it’s snowing, but apparently J will melt if she has to walk in the rain. So it had better not rain tonight. Or I’ll pout.

MicaEars

Murphy sez: Too late, dude. You’re already pouting. It’s probably on account of your legs hurting. When J finally finds something you can take for your joints without fish oil in it, I’m sure you’ll feel lots better.

I wish J had gotten a picture of that cat we saw on our walk the other night. It was an orange tabby cat standing back between some bushes, and it arched up something fierce and hissed at us when we walked by. If it hadn’t hissed, I might not have seen it at all! But I really, really wanted to chase it off. That cat’s lucky J saw it when we did, eh Mica? If not for her, we coulda had fuzzball stew for dinner…

Mica sez: I don’t know, Murph – it was a pretty big cat. I’m not sure the scratches would be worth it. Besides, the grocery stores are out of canned pumpkin, though J swears she can’t imagine why. She cooked up some butternut squash for us to have tomorrow instead though, which might have made an equally good side for cat, I suppose – as long as there’s enough turmeric paste mixed in. Somehow, I don’t think she’s gonna let us try it though. Too bad, really.

MicaNewBone

Murphy sez: Well, maybe we can try squirrel then? I mean, I really thought about hopping the neighbor’s fence this week. Those squirrels that live in his tree were just teasing me – they’re so cheeky! And they chatter at me from those branches like they own the place – like *I’m* the one who’s trespassing. In my own yard!

Maybe those aliens who were working up on the poles late the other night would give me a boost up in that bucket-thingy with the lights on it. It sure was scary, seeing them up in the air like that after dark. I came and got you guys, but J acted like it was no big deal. Then you had to go all hyper-dog and almost start a fight…geez, dude. I was just letting everyone know that we were being invaded!

Mica sez: I know…and it was exciting! I was just gearing up to attack the aliens. I don’t know why J wasn’t excited. Or why she made us come back in the house. I mean, we should have kept an eye on those guys. By the time we got back out to the yard, they were gone.

But we didn’t fight. Not then, and not when that high school person came to the house selling stuff either. I mean, he didn’t knock, but because he knows J & B, he didn’t leave either. He looked pretty confused when J opened the door. She was just happy we behaved ourselves. I don’t know why. We’re good dogs. We can behave…when we want to.

Murphy sez: I don’t know why he didn’t come in, dang it. I mean, we’ve met him before, so he could have come in to say hi. J still seems a little skittish about that though. Silly girl. Think that’s why we can’t go to the 50 States hair guy thing to benefit the Rimrock Humane Society in September? I mean, I don’t want to go see the mobile groomer, but seems like a good cause, since they helped me out so much and all. Think she’ll go get a haircut?

Mica sez: I don’t know – she’s pretty picky about who cuts her hair. And the stuff they put on it too. And I overheard her saying she won’t take me to the mobile grooming thingy, because that would be mean to the groomers. It’s on a busy street though, Murph. Lots of loud engines and motorcycles. Might not be a fun place for you either.

I’m pretty sure that either way, J’s gonna drop off a donation if nothing else. And that guy cutting hair seems like a pretty well-known dude, so maybe she’ll get over herself and go get a trim too. Not that it matters much, since she wears a hat most of the time when she’s not at work…even when she gets home and takes us walkin’.

HeadinOut

Murphy sez: Yeah – speaking of walking, I wonder when they’ll get those new sidewalks finished up in front of the school they’re building across the street? Soon, I hope. It’s kinda dangerous walking out in the street where they’ve narrowed it with those bump-out-thingys.

Mica sez: Well, the new concrete is in, so probably whenever that sets up. We should get a picture of that one of these days. There’s a lot of construction going on over there! Maybe when our new Pawscam gets here next month. Then we can take the pics, since J can’t really manage a camera while she’s keepin’ track of us.

Murphy sez: Yeah…and then we’ll have proof when cats sneak up on us during our walks…

Hey, did J mention something about new posts here next week? Does that mean more work for us? This site is sort of our “job” now, since we’re stuck at home while she and B go off to work every day. We’ve got affiliate links and everything – but we’re donating part of the proceeds from those back to help other doggies, right?

Mica sez: Yep, that’s right. We earn a tiny fraction when people click most of the links on this site, and some of that will help keep us in bully sticks and supplements, and the rest will be donated back to local dogs in need. J says all we have to do is be cute & funny. And since we don’t even have to try on those, really, our job is easy!

But we also need to give people more information, so we’re going to be doing some reviews, and J’s going to do some posts on how we stay healthy. Those start next week, but there will still only be one email per week for subscribers with this post, and links to any other ones during the week, so no spam!

Mmm…spam. Are we sure we don’t want any spam?

Murphy sez: Now I’m hungry. We should get second breakfast. Did we miss anything?

Mica sez: Nope, I think we covered it all, Murph. Until next time, anyways. You know you’re not getting a second breakfast though, right? Better just take a nap…

What A Week!

BullySticks

Mica sez: Wow, Murphy. It’s been a crazy week around here. I don’t even think people are going to believe it. Wild, wacky stuff. But I think we’re handling it pretty well, don’t you? Almost as good as those olympic people that J and B have been watching on TV this week…

Murphy sez: Of course we are. Because we’re just that good. The “only a tiny bit of a freakout at the motorcycle gang who nearly ran us over the other night ‘cause we weren’t crossing the street fast enough when they wanted to make a left turn” kind of good. Though I kinda would like to find those guys and teach ‘em some manners. We don’t run, dang it. We walk or trot, like the civilized and somewhat injured (in my case) pups that we are. Sheesh.

Mica sez: I can’t even believe you did so good – and you were on the outside, even, so they were comin’ right at you! But you didn’t bark and barely gave J any trouble when she scooted you up onto the curb, so I say you win a gold medal for conquering your fears just then. Well done, Murph. You’ve come a long way…

Murphy sez: Hey thanks man. I did pretty well with the M&M J dropped earlier too. She tried to take it back, of course, but I managed to swallow half of it, and the rest turned her fingers orange. Serves her right for trying to take it away. “Chocolate’s not good for you, Murphy,” she says. Harumph! One M&M is not going to kill me. And the half I got was totally delicious.

MurphyJungle

Mica sez: I can’t give you a gold medal for eating junk food, Murph. But you can have a silver one for helping J with the weeding by snacking on a good chunk of bindweed. I think she’s still gonna have to get out there with the pruners and cut the tree starts down, but you made a good dent in the actual weeds, and you’ve been keeping the grass trimmed around the sugar maple. Another atta-boy for you. You’re killin’ it this week!

Murphy sez: It wasn’t all that violent, Mica. Geez. Although I did kill that bunny that came in the PupJoy box we finally opened last week. It was so soft and fuzzy, I actually think I set a new record for chewing a seam apart and unstuffing the little guy. It was gone less than an hour after it came out of the box. RIP, little fleece and denim bunny dude…

MurphyUnstuffed

Mica sez: Yeah, and then you tore the arms off my new fox after I chewed on him for awhile, and J had to cut off his ears and feet so you wouldn’t swallow them, and by that time, the poor thing was just about a goner. Ironic that the only things that lasted from that box are the stuffed postman, who I don’t think even you are going to chew apart for a good long while, and some sort of weird bacon-flavored fake antler chew toy that J thinks we’ll be too rough with, so she’s saving it for another doggie. Someone who isn’t as rough on toys as we are.

MicaToy

Murphy sez: Well, you’re the one she’s constantly referring to as a “brute”. She usually just calls me cute. ‘Cause I am.

Hey, did you see that huge bag of bully sticks J and B brought home from Costco Monday night?! It’s too bad we only get them on weekends. I mean, they could buy two bags, right? I do love a good bully stick to snack on…

Mica sez: Me too…I tried to talk J into giving us one that night, but she wouldn’t budge. She can be a big meanie sometimes. Like when she locked us in the dining room the other day so that guy could come work on our internet connection. I think she should have left us out. We wouldn’t hurt him. And it might be fun to watch him climb that big pole out back…

Exiled

Murphy sez: Yeah! The one those pesky squirrels use as a stupid highwire highway. I wonder if that guy saw a squirrel up there. Do you think I should ask? Do you think he’d catch it for me? I mean, that would be the ultimate squeaky toy, right?

Mica sez: Yes, yes it would. I tore apart a squirrel the other night after our walk…although it wasn’t a real squirrel, so that probably doesn’t count. I don’t think it’s very sporting to have someone else catch the squirrel for you though. Wouldn’t it be more fun to catch it yourself?

MicaUnstuffed

Murphy sez: If I could climb poles and trees, sure. Since I can’t…I’m good having someone give me a little “hunting assist”.

So what are we gonna do this weekend, Mica? It’s been cooler, so walking’s been more fun – though we did have to walk after dark a few nights this week on account of J having too much stuff to do. Good thing we have our light-up leashes! Though J’s thinking maybe she should get us light up collars too, so it doesn’t look like just a floating light saber…

Mica sez: That might be cool for Halloween, actually. It would look like she’s walking ghost dogs if our collars lit up too! Think it would freak people out?

Murphy sez: I dunno. But that one guy sure thought our leashes were cool the other night. Silly man didn’t even seem to notice us. I mean, we’re way cooler than our leashes. Humans are weird.

Murphy sez: Yes they are, Murph. Yes they are. Is it Saturday yet? Should I bug J for a bully stick?

Mica sez: One more day of napping, dude. I think we’ve earned that this week, don’t you?

Healing is Hard Work

BeautifulMurph

Mica sez: Hey Murph – I notice your leg is a little worse for the wear. What’s up with that? I thought you were healing?

Murphy sez: Well, I was. But then J was home last week, and B was gone, and I had a legging on all the time instead of my cone, and there’s been construction for that new school just down the street…I sorta went backwards a lil bit. And J put some “healing” gel on my leg when it was looking much better and nearly all scarred over that made me itch like crazy and I pulled the gel and the scabs off, so it’s mostly her fault. But I don’t jump at every little noise now, and even when I do, I don’t immediately go for my leg. So that’s progress, right?

Mica sez: Definitely. I still jump when someone touches me. No matter who or where. Not as bad as when I first got here, but…I spook easily. So what are they gonna do about your leg? I mean, you can’t just leave it like that…

Murphy sez: Nope. J started leaving my legging off during the day again this week, and the scar tissue’s coming back quick. She and B forgot to put a legging on a lunch two days in a row, and she noticed I don’t really even try to lick at it now if the legging is off. She thinks it makes my leg itch worse to have it on, so they decided to s’periment with leaving my leg bare except when we’re walking, or overnight, or when J’s in the shower or something where she can’t watch me.

Mica sez: No medicine or anything? Just open to the air? Will that work?

Post-walk panting...
Post-walk panting…

Murphy sez: Well, medicine once or twice a day, and keeping it clean. But that’s it. J says wounds need lots of air to heal, and I’m already getting lots of good healing stuff in my food, so she thinks as long as I don’t pull it open again, it’ll heal better if we mostly leave it alone and don’t mess with it so much. It needs to dry out a bit, she says. I don’t know if it’ll work or not, but I guess we’ll see. I just gotta keep from licking and chewing on it…

Mica sez: That’s the hard part, right? I just can’t stop licking stuff, especially late at night – it’s so cathartic. But I lick bones a lot, or the carpet. J says she doesn’t care as long as I don’t lick myself open like you do. I don’t think she understands how soothing it is to anxious pups like us.

Murphy sez: I mostly lick early in the morning when I’m just waking up, and the sock itches. But when she changes it first thing, no lickies. I don’t know why I do it, really. I just…do. But I stop when J tells me to, mostly.

Mica sez: We should make a list of the medicines she’s tried for your leg, so other dogs can try them if they have the same problem, eh Murph? Like a First Aid Kit for dogs sort of thing? And maybe the stuff she puts in our food too…maybe it could help someone else…

Murphy sez: Yeah – that’s a great idea! Now that we have our own site, we could even add links to the stuff, so people can read about it. I tell you what…J’s used a lot of stuff on my leg, and so did my foster family. So we have a lot to recommend! We’ll add that to J’s list. Lick gran-u-lo-mas aren’t easy to heal, or mine isn’t, anyway. If we can help another dog, that would be pawsome!

Post-walk coma...
Post-walk coma…

Mica sez: You bet, Murph. And we’ll keep people updated on how the latest strategy is working too. I hope this latest one works. Wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to wear a legging all winter? Except you might want to, just ’cause it’s cold. But that’s different. And J still needs to make you a sweater, and us both coats for walking. Geez. She’d better get started on those, eh? I mean, it’s gonna be winter soon, and I don’t like being cold….

Murphy sez: Me neither! Do you think she’ll make us walk in the snow? ‘Cause you know I’m picky about my feet…and those boots she bought really don’t work as well as they should.

Mica sez: Yep, I think she’ll make us walk in the snow. But she has some fleece booties that will work for snow. If you don’t kick ’em off, anyway. And it would be easier if your leg was healed, so the elastic doesn’t go over that spot.

Murphy sez: Well, I’ll just have to get my leg healed then. That’s all there is to it.

NewBox

Hey Mica – did you notice there’s a new box from PupJoy on the table? When do ya think we get to open that? I think we finally killed the hedgehog!

Mica sez: That hedgehog put up a good fight, but we killed it, for sure. It lasted several weeks – that’s a really long time around here! I think J should open that new box tonight. I mean, we’ve been good this week, right? We deserve whatever’s in there. I’m sure it’s something fun.

But seriously, Murph. You have to stop eating the stuffing…

Two-Wheeled Sneaky-People

Sun-tannin' on a lunch break...
                             Sun-tannin’ on a lunch break…

Murphy sez: There sure are a lot of sneaky people riding those two-wheeled contraptions around lately, don’t you think, Mica? Seems like they come out of nowhere on our walks, and mostly from behind us. What’s up with that? Are they trying to scare us? ‘Cause it’s working. You’ve been pretty skittish lately when we’re out…

Mica sez: I just wish I could hear them coming, ya know? It’s kind of freaky to be walkin’ along, minding my own business, and then boom! Out of nowhere, there’s someone right beside me! On wheels! They’re like ghosts, I tell ya. It’s not natural. It really shouldn’t be allowed.

Murphy sez: I don’t think they mean us any harm. I mean, most of them seem nice. They smile, and sometimes they say hi. But it is a bit unsettling. I prefer those to the noisy kind though. Especially those little tiny ones with super-loud high-pitched engines. Too much like a dirt-bike to me. I was ready to chase that one dude down the other night. He really got on my nerves. If I hadn’t been on a leash…

Mica sez: Yeah, I noticed. J had to stop us twice so you’d quit pulling so hard on your prong collar. Lucky for her you had that on too, or she might have ended up face-first on the pavement. You get excited about the strangest things, Murph. That guy didn’t seem any creepier than anyone else to me. Just noisy.

Murphy sez: He could have been a perfectly nice guy, for all I know. But I hate his bike, and want it to die. Which is different from the kid we see on the other street sometimes. I don’t care if he’s on a skateboard or a normal ol’ bicycle – I hate that guy. If I ever get a hold of him, it’s not gonna be pretty.

Mica sez: Aw, you shouldn’t hate people, Murph. What did he do to you, anyway?

Murphy sez: Some things are best left unsaid, Mica. That dude had just better stay on his side of the street, is all.

Say, speaking of people being out of place, do you think that old golden retriever got home okay?

Mica sez: If J remembered the right yard to tell the nice lady who picked him up, I bet he did. Didn’t see him there tonight, but hopefully she got him home. She seemed nice – that lady who had him in her car. Paw-bumps to her for helping the old guy get out of traffic and un-lost!

Murphy sez: If he’d been wearing a collar and ID, it would have been lots easier. She wouldn’t have even had to ask J if she knew where the dog lived. But so many dogs around here don’t even have collars. Why don’t people keep ID on their dogs, Mica?

Pretty tag collar!
                                    Pretty tag collar!

Mica sez: I guess some people just like a challenge, Murph. Even with a microchip, it’s a heck of a lot easier to just make a phone call or knock on a door than it is to find a microchip reader and get scanned. Maybe we can think of something to do to raise awareness of how important it is for us four-leggers (and tripods!) to have ID on us at all times. Wanna do a contest this fall, Murph?

Murphy sez: That’s a great idea! We’ll have to talk to J about it and see what she says. Maybe she’ll buy us some swag to give away. Collars and ID tags would be cool, right? Like…a collar and leash wardrobe?

Mica sez: Yep – and I know just the thing for ID, actually. But I think we should try it out first, right? It’s the responsible thing to do. We’d better go find J and tell her our plan. There’s some stuff we need her to order. Hey, do you think we should ask for our own web site?

Murphy sez: Yeah! That would be totally cool.Maybe we could be famous! And it’s probably time for some treats too, right? I mean, it’s always treat-time somewhere…
