Recipe: Sweet Veggie Crisps

Recipe: Sweet Veggie Crisps

Ingredients (all measurements approximate – eyeballing it works just fine)
1 to 1 1/2 cups veggies (frozen peas are what we use most often, but chunked up carrots work just as well)
1 small can pineapple juice (6 – 8 ozs)
1 tbsp Honey
1 to 1 1/2 cups coconut flour
Herbs/spices to taste, or for specific needs (ie, ginger, parsley, garlic, etc…do your research first, of course)

Murphy sez: So you start out by sharing some of the cut veggies (or frozen peas, which is what J uses most often because it’s quick and no chopping) with the dogs while you’re getting them ready for that noisy processor thingy. Then you pour in the pineapple juice without sharing, which is just wrong. And then you add the honey and maybe share, maybe not, because humans like to mess with dogs like that. Harumph.

Then the machine thing makes lots of noise, and you get a sort of veggie/pineapple/honey smoothie. You gotta give each dog a little taste to make sure it’s good. If you’re gonna add any spices or herbs, that’s the time to do it.

After the dogs have taste-tested, then you add that white stuff that smells like coconut. J doesn’t measure (she likes to live on the edge). She just dumps in a bit, and then the machine makes noise, and she dumps in a bit more until the mix turns into this dough-like stuff. Once it will stay shaped like a cookie, you gotta give the dogs another taste, because we’re the quality control crew. Maybe two tastes.

Then you pat the dough-stuff into plastic trays for that drying machine – J just uses her hands to pat it out sort of thin on the sheets. Make sure to leave a little bit in the bowl – ’cause the dogs always get the last bite! She makes some patterns in the dough with a knife, and then stacks them in that drying thing, and it makes noise for a really long time (about 12 -14 hours) and makes the kitchen nice and warm.

After the trays are in the drying thing and it’s on, you give the dogs the last bits of dough from the bowl, and then clean up the kitchen. Make sure when you turn off the drying thing that you give the dogs a warm crisp! Just like human puppies getting warm cookies from the oven, I imagine! Yum yum!

J stores them in a jar in the cupboard and a dish with a lid by the front door. One batch lasts us about a week (but only because we can’t reach the jars and can’t take lids off).

Enjoy!
